There are a lot of things you should start doing in your 20s that you probably don’t even realize how important they are. Finding good habits to start now will help you out so much later in life! Just because you’re young, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be thinking about your skin, health, and body. Here is a list of 10 things that we think are the best habits to form in your 20s. They are all healthy habits to start today!
1. Get in the habit of a good face washing routine.
It can be easy to just wash your face whenever you feel like it… but it’s better to get yourself in a routine. Practicing a good routine of washing your face twice a day and exfoliating, using a face mask, or anything else you feel necessary for your skin will do amazing things for your skin. Your face will definitely be thanking you 20 years from now!
2. ALWAYS use SPF when you’re spending time outside.
This might be a given, because “wear sunscreen!” is something we have all been hearing since we were little kids. SPF is so important for your skin to prevent skin cancer, sun spots, wrinkles, etc. Even though these things might not be showing up now, they will in the future if you don’t start wearing sunscreen. So get in the good habit of wearing sunscreen every time you go outside, now!
3. Eat your vegetables.
We know, this is extremely cliché to say. But it’s SO important! Vegetables give you so many nutrients that will help you out later in life, so get in the habit of eating them now if you aren’t already. If you don’t like them, there are so many ways out there to that you can disguise them as foods you do like, such as baked parmesan zucchini or mashed cauliflower and spinach. The possibilities are endless!
4. Cut back on sugar.
This one can be pretty hard to start if you’re someone who loves sugary foods. It can definitely be done though, and is pretty easy to keep up with once you get in the habit of it. Some ways to cut back on sugar are:
- Don’t drink soda.
- Cut out typical junk food snacks, like candy bars or cake.
- Substitute ice cream for yogurt (or frozen yogurt!)
5. Live an active lifestyle — find a workout that you don’t hate!
One of the best habits that you can get into when you’re in your 20s is to live an active healthy lifestyle. We can’t stress how important this is! If you don’t get up and moving now, you’re just going to find it harder to start working out later in life.
This is a lot easier when you do something that you actually enjoy doing. If you hate running, then don’t run. If you hate lifting weights, then don’t do it! There are endless options of ways to get yourself active and healthy. Some examples could be:
- Hot yoga
- A spin class
- Playing tennis
6. Learn how to cook.
Learning how to cook can be a lifesaver! If you don’t know how to cook, then you’re most likely either eating instant foods or getting takeout all the time — both of which usually aren’t good for you at all. If you know how to cook, then you have so many more options of what you can eat! It’s also a lot easier to eat healthy. Check out Pinterest, there are a ton of easy recipes for when you’re just learning how to cook!
7. Get into a good sleeping routine.
When you were in high school and college, it’s likely that you didn’t have a good sleeping routine at all. You probably pulled some all-nighters, or stayed up into the early hours of the morning and woke up near the afternoon most days. While that’s the “norm” for college, you don’t want to get in the habit of continuing to sleep like that once you graduate. Honestly, you should even try to get in a good sleeping routine while you’re still college, no matter how hard it might be! Aim for 6-8 hours each night, and stick to it.
8. Take care of your skin.
This is another one of the most important ones on the list. Taking care of your skin now will benefit you so much in the future! Keep it clean, moisturize it, and exfoliate your skin. Not only will these keep your skin looking fresh and young, it will also help you in your shaving routine. It seems like there are so many rules out there on skin care for 20 year olds, but the bottom line is to just take care of it! You know your skin better than anyone else does, so do the things that work for it and make sure that you fit those things into your daily routine.
9. Surround yourself with people who motivate you.
The best way to make sure that you’re keeping good habits is to keep people around you who support you and who are living the same lifestyle that you are! It’s a lot easier to stick to something if you know that you aren’t alone doing it. You want people around that are going to hold you to your good habits, not ones that are going to try to bring you back to bad ones!
10. Make goals and stick to them.
It will never work if you don’t make goals. They will help you remember why you’re practicing these good habits, and will help you stick to them!
